Tiruchirapalli

The historical city of Tiruchirappalli, popularly known as Tiruchi or Tiruchirapalli is situated on the banks of the river Cauvery. It is the fourth largest city in Tamil Nadu and is home to several beautiful temples, churches and a large number of scenic spots. The rock fort is a well known landmark of the city. Once the citadel of the Chola kings, the fort has seen the passing of dynasties. Ruled in turn by the Pallavas and then the Pandyas, the present fort was built by the Nayak rulers of Madurai.

Tiruchirapalli is famous for its rich cultural and wonderful architectural heritage and the town represents a fine blend of tradition and modernity. It is also famous for artificial diamonds, cigars, handloom cloth, glass bangles and wooden and clay toys.

Rock Fort
The Rock Fort Ganapathi Temple, also known as the Uchi Pillayar Kovil is situated on an 83 m tall rock above sea level. This rock is believed to be the oldest rock in the world dating back to about 3800 million years. Easily Tiruchirapalli’s best known landmark, it is located on the banks of the river Cauvery. Oomiyan Kottai
This place was used as jail by British people where they imprisoned the convicts. It was built in the year 1687 by King Sethupathi of Ramanathapuram. It is famous for housing both a Shiva and a Vishnu temple. The Shiva temple has some interesting information about music, while on the walls of the Vishnu shrine, beautiful paintings are seen which depict the demised evil spirit by Adisesha - the servant of Lord Vishnu.
Government Museum
The Government Museum, located near the Rani Mangammal Mahal lies in the heart of Bharathidasansan town near the super bazaar of Tiruchirapalli. The major attractions of this museum include the sculptures of Mahavira, Gautam Buddha, and Lord Vishnu. The museum also displays a collection of rare insects, birds and mammals, ancient fossils, prehistoric Megalithic tools, Palaeolithic and Neolithic Tools.
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple
Dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a reclining form of Lord Vishnu, this temple covers a total area of 156 acres! Some visible features in its architecture include the 21 surrounding ‘gopurams’ along with an ornate gateway, which is also the tallest ‘gopuram’ of India. It also comprises a hall containing 1000 pillars and holds the annual chariot festival of Tamil Nadu that lasts for 21 days.
