Kathmandu is an exotic and fascinating showcase of the cultural and ecological heritage and is the capital of the mountain kingdom of Nepal. Nestled in the Himalayas, Kathmandu holds numerous secrets, myths and splendid trekking trails. The city is home to numerous temples, shrines, stupas, gompas, chaityas and palaces.

The breath-taking Kathmandu valley is described by many as a treasure house of art and sculptures sprawled across a mighty green valley. The National Museum of Nepal and the Natural History Museum of Nepal promises is home to many of these sculptures and artifacts.

Annually, Kathmandu harbours an epic number of tourists. This has led to a mishmash of culinary experiences that suit tourists of all countries. Adaptations of popular dishes such as American chop suey, which is a sweet and sour sauce with crispy noodles with a fried egg commonly added on top, are commonplace.

From enchanting ensembles reminiscent of the flower power generation to traditional silks and woolen carpets, Kathmandu will float every shopper's dream. Stalls and shops between Indrachowk and Asan sell traditional brassware and some between Thamel and Khichapokhri sell Nepalese musical instruments, sarangis and bamboo flutes.

If you're in the mood for jewellery, the old city of Kathmandu has its fair share of traditional gold and silversmiths who make fine ethnic jewellery.

Fairs and Festivals
Numerous fairs and festivals are held in Kathmandu. Most of these fairs and festivals have their origin to the Malla period. Sighting these as a major tourist attraction, they've been given an urban overhaul with deft cultural touches. Festivities include Ghode (horse) jatra, Indra-jatra, Dasai Durga Puja festivals, Shivratri and are celebrated with fervour and enthusiasm.
