Gurgaon, 5 October 2016: SpiceJet, India’s favourite budget airline, has once again reiterated its regional connectivity agenda this time with a special focus on North-East India. Fastening the north eastern states on its pan-India radar the airline flagged off 16 new flights on the Kolkata-Silchar-Guwahati; Kolkata-Aizawl-Guwahati; and Kolkata-Gorakhpur-Delhi routes. SpiceJet is the first low-cost carrier to introduce direct daily flights on the Guwahati-Silchar, Guwahati-Aizawl, Aizawl-Kolkata, Gorakhpur-Delhi and Gorakhpur-Kolkata routes.

SpiceJet intends to penetrate the underserved markets within its domestic network and thereby aims to enhance regional connectivity. Whilst the airline has outlined new markets on to its network inclusive of Silchar, Gorakhpur and Aizawl, it will also deploy a dedicated fleet of three Q400 for the north-eastern markets.

On 4th October, SpiceJet flagged off its new flights from Guwahati, Aizawl and Gorakhpur in the auspicious presence of dignitaries and ministerial chieftains like Shri Jayant Sinha - Hon'ble Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal - Hon'ble Chief Minister of Assam, and Shri Lt. Gen Nirbhay Sharma, Hon'ble Governor of Mizoram amongst others.

The airline will also operate new flights on sectors like Kolkata-Silchar-Guwahati; Kolkata-Aizawl-Guwahati and Kolkata-Gorakhpur-Delhi. Kolkata-Visakhapatnam-Kolkata flights are effective from 1st November.

Mr. Ajay Singh – CMD, SpiceJet on the occasion said, “There is tremendous growth taking place in the economies of small towns of the tier-II and tier-III cities. The next wave of growth for the Indian aviation industry is going to come from them as these small town airports will enable the industry to explore the growth potential of these untapped markets. With the onus of operating the highest number of flights into smaller destinations in the market today we are now focusing on elevating these regional cities on to our pan-India network. We are also planning to boost our departures from Kolkata by 40% with an extensive outlook for domestic and international network from the city.”

SpiceJet is all set to chart Kolkata as its third Bombardier Q400 hub after Delhi and Hyderabad and is looking at expanding its domestic and international network from the city. The airline will also ramp up its international connectivity from the city with an additional daily flight to Bangkok, and new daily flights to Dhaka and Chittagong from December this year. SpiceJet also has plans to introduce additional frequencies on routes like – Kolkata-Bagdogra and Kolkata-Guwahati.

With the augmented program, the airline will now operate 317 daily flights vis-à-vis its current schedule of 298 daily flights.
