The city reflects the modern developed side of Madhya Pradesh. Its close proximity to India’s financial capital - Mumbai, has definitely lead Indore into a more progressive path. Indore is also the largest city of Madhya Pradesh. The city of Indore along with the satellite towns of Pithampur and Dewas form an economically progressive region. It is here that you find the maximum numbers of educational institutes and centers of learning. Chhatris are one of the major attractions of Indore. These cenotaphs erected as tribute to the Holkar rulers and their family members are standing testimony to the great Maratha architecture. The Lal Bagh Palace is another attraction here. The construction of this grand monument began during the reign of Tukoji Rao Holkar – II and went on in three phases.

Shopping

There are a number of shopping places in Indore. Even international shops and showrooms are present here. Indore is also famous for its cloth industry. Fabrics adorned with hand block printing, tie and dye and Zari work are some of the specialties of Indore. Maheshwari and Chanderi sarees are an all time favorite for the people residing here. Apart from this, there are also a variety of local crafts to choose from. Indore is truly a shopper's paradise.

Lal Bagh Palace
Spreads over an area of 72 acres, Lal Bagh Palace is one of the grandest monuments the Holkar dynasty left Indore. A reflection of their taste, grandeur and lifestyle, its construction began in 1886 under Tukoji Rao Holkar II. It is filled with an inexplicable sense of history. Now converted into museum it displays number of trophies, contemporary Indian paintings and sculptures, prehistoric artifacts’, a fine collection of Maharajas photographs. Many royal receptions were held here.
Annapurna Temple
This temple was inspired by the Meenakshi temple of Madurai. Four life-sized elephants hold an ornately decorated gate in plaster. Inside the temple of Annapurna Devi are also temples of Shiva, Kal Bhairava, Hanuman and a Pravachan Hall. The outer wall of the main temple is decorated with colourful motifs from mythological stories.
Rajwada
Standing in the heart of a market place, the two centuries old seven storeyed palace is a mix of Maratha, Mughal and French styles. The palace portrays three stone made lower stories, wooden upper stories, well-laid garden with fountains and an artificial waterfall.
Bada Ganpati
Better known for its size than antiquity, this temple houses perhaps the largest Ganesh idol in the world measuring 25 feet from crown to foot. Created as a result of the dream of an Avantika (Ujjain) resident, Shri Dadhich, it was built in 1875.
Kanch Mandir
This Jain temple is an architectural marvel in glass. It exhibits complicated patterns of glass paintings, which are painted with utmost devotion. The paintings display unique talent and try to depict the various aspects of Jainism. The special glass chamber at the top of this remarkable shrine has a raised statue of Mahavira, which is having a multiplied effect.
Central Museum
The Indore Museum houses the finest collection of Parmar sculptures from Hinglajgarh. The Parmar style originated here, and is characterized by proportioned figures, carefully and ornately depicted in stone. The museum is also known for its collection of coins, arms and armor.
